Decorative Stones from Another Galaxy? Succulents That Are Simply Beautiful!

Pebble plants (sometimes called living stones) are native to southern Africa. They look so magical that the man who discovered them thought that he had just come across some unusual stones.

They don’t have a stalk and their leaves form pairs growing together in a bizarre shape resembling a stone.

The leaves have got an opening at the top often dividing the plant into 2 separate parts. Pebble plants in the spring form new leaves and at the same time the old leaves die away. This usually takes place in March – May.

The plant blooms for the first time after three years. The leaves open and the flower is either white or yellow.

The natural habitat of the plants is a very hot, dry and sunny climate of Africa. They store water in their leaves which lets them survive long droughts.

They prefer the mixture of sand and gravel. If you have the medium for cacti, you need to add sand in 5:1 ratio. The top layer can be decorated with stones or thicker gravel.

Pebble plants prefer sunny and drafty spots, though cold streams of air are not welcome. Damp location may result in rotting. In its hibernation period, the most appropriate temperature range is 15 -19 degrees C.

The succulents need to be watered every 2 – 4 weeks. Whenever you want to water them, first make sure that the soil is not damp.

If you have the opportunity to store the plant in the winter at 10-15 degrees C, you don’t need to water them at all.

If the ambient temperature is higher, you can only dew them, but still refrain from watering.

At the beginning of March, the leaves may start to fade, but this will be caused by forming new leaves and the old ones dying away

Pebble stones do not require any special fertilization. If you feel it is necessary, use any cactus fertilizer once a month.

Pebble stones propagate by seeds, from March till June. the seeds sprout very quickly as long as they get enough sun exposure.

However, they should be exposed to direct sun gradually and carefully.

If the plants are watered excessively, they may be infected by fungus.

Moreover, too little sun and too much fertilization can lead to excessive growth and cracking.

The plants can fall prey to spider mites, mealybugs and fungus gnats. To fight them, apply dedicated pesticides.
