In my opinion it’s really nice to come back to a nice and cosy house. However, sometimes all our cleaning efforts go wasted, because simply speaking some things are not done right. Yes, like it or not, plenty of our ‘perfect’ ways to clean up are not all that effective. Let this be a warning for you. How to get rid of habits that actually make your place even dirtier?

If you are work-shy, but still, you want to keep your house clean, you really need to forget these habits.

    #1 Wrong cleaning sequence

Have you ever noticed that it is under your couch and behind the TV where the dust accumulates the most? This is because we always put off the hardest tasks which makes the cleaning last longer. Unfortunately, these simple tasks can take much longer than you think. That is why you

have to follow the right order. First, clean all surfaces in upper part of the room (lamps,

top shelves) and gradually go on to clean lower shelves, do the hoovering, etc.

#2 Right after cleaning the toilet, you put the brush into the stand

That’s great you use a toilet brush. However, putting it into the stand is not the best solution. Wondering why? A wet and dirty brush in the stand is a perfect environment for bacteria growth. As a result, with time, using the same brush, all you will do is to spread the bacteria all around the toilet. To stop that simply let the brush dry.

Remember to remove the water from the stand on regular basis and to use fragrant oils; pine for example will really refresh the stand and the brush as well.

#3 Pay attention to the slicing board

Even if you wash the board with warm water every time you use it, it can still be dirty. Tiny pieces of food might get inside the board’s structure, then go bad and moldy, which results in bacteria growth. If you use a wooden one, remember to clean it regularly with salt and lemon. A plastic board can be immersed in hydrogen peroxide, then it has to be washed and dried.

    #4 Dirty vacuum cleaner

I am aware of how many chores you have. However, replacing the vacuum cleaner bag on regular basis is a must. When the bag is full, the dust sits upon the filter. As a result, instead of collecting dust and dirt, the cleaner leaves it on floors and carpets.

#5 Transmitting bacteria from one room to another

Having one universal sponge for all rooms is a very bad idea. This is the best way to carry

bacteria from one place to another. Moreover, if you keep all your cleaning clothes under the washbasin or in a cabinet, with time they might give off some nasty smell. Even if you wash the cleaning clothes and sponges, they might still be dirty. It is much better to have separate products for particular rooms and scald them out after the cleaning is done.

#6 Putting all dirty dishes in the dishwasher

A dishwasher is a great devise for washing a number of dirty items. Please note, though,

that not every item should be washed there. A garlic press, a grater or other objects with a number of inaccessible spots should be washed manually, and immediately after use. The dishwasher may not remove all food bits and they may go mouldy with time.

    #7 Too much cleaning agent

I know – using a lot of cleaning agent sound really tempting. However, it is not true that

the more cleaning agent you apply, the cleaner the surface will be. Quite the contrary – it might make the surface greasier which will cause dust and dirt stick to it much more. Remember, sometimes ‘less’ means ‘more’!

    #8 Ignoring the sink

The sink where you do the washing-up might be much dirtier than it actually looks. Most of us don’t realise the fact that warm water and washing-up liquid do not remove the dirty residue off the sink. Remember to clean the sink frequently with caustic soda so that bacteria won’t spread.

    #9 Cleaning too fast

Precision matters. That is why you really need to read the label on the product you

are about to use. Some agents might take some time to ‘sink in’ the surface or item. That is why spread some of the agent on the bath or toilet surface and get down to another room. Come back after a couple of minutes and finish cleaning. You will see that the same product works better than before.

    #10 Feather duster

Although they enjoy the reputation of a reliable cleaning device, the truth is that they only bring the dust up and then it falls upon the same ‘cleaner’ surface. You’d better go for a microfiber cleaning cloth which will definitely collect more dust. Of course don’t forget to wash it properly.
