A Vegan Takes Her Neighbors to Court Because of … Barbecue Smells
Cilla Garden is a very strong-willed vegan from Australia. One of the things she is determined to fight against is her neighbors’ tranquility and well-being. She took them to court because of the smell of grilled fish coming from their garden.

In her interview for Nine News she said that she was not able to go on living in such conditions.
She said she couldn’t enjoy her own backyard as she barely went out. It was so devastating that she could hardly sleep.
Her neighbors would throw barbecue parties on quite regular basis. Not only did they grill a variety of meat, but their children would also spend hours playing basketball. As if that had not been enough, some of the guests smoked tobacco! How can you go on living when your neighbors take advantage of good weather and have a good time outside?
Before the Court
Cilla decided to take her ‘horrible’ neighbors to court. Her complaints included the smell of grilled fish and other wrongdoings listed above. She lost the case before the court of the first instance. And then before the court of the second one. And finally she lost it before the Supreme Court, too. But this is not the end of the story…
The soul of a warrior
In spite of winning all court cases, Cilla’s neighbors decided to bury the hatchet. They moved the grills to the most distant parts of the garden, banned their children from playing basketball and asked everyone to be quieter. Just to play fair. But the other side does not follow this rule. She has already announced another trial for each new barbecue is a good reason to fight!
