There is a field in the Netherlands that, once the sun sets, becomes a stage for an unusual performance. It glows with thousands of lights as if a myriad of magical glow-worms landed there.

The town of Lelystad is located in the center of Netherlands. It would be yet another town somewhere in Europe but for the fact that at night it looks like a location from a science-fiction movie. It’s all because of an artist and his project called ‘GROW’.

    The advantages of artificial illumination

On a field of the area of two hectares Daan Roosegaarde installed thousands of red and blue LED lights. What is the rationale behind it? The objective is to promote the use of artificial illumination among farmers.

In fact, it is a kind of an experiment to find out whether there is any positive impact of artificial light on plants and whether it can boost their growth reducing the demand for pesticides at the same time.

The light are powered with solar panel batteries. Consequently, they can work every night without any human intervention. The field, vibrating with shades of blue and red, looks magical and makes you immediately forget about all the here and now problems.
