Cheer up, I have some good news for you. You won’t need to wall your balcony off! There are some much easier ways to keep the birds away.

Pigeons are considered domesticated animals, kept by man for centuries. That is why cities are their natural habitat. It is also the plenty of food cities offer that attracts them. Many people feed them in the winter so no wonder they treat terraces and balconies like a kind of canteen.

Unfortunately, pigeons make a lot of mess with their excrements. Due to their acidity, they cause a lot of damage to walls. Moreover, they leave lots of feathers and food. Their cooing will wake up even those fast asleep.

There are some humanitarian methods to make the birds a thing of the past. Most importantly, none of them will get hurt.

Fixing a protective net gives immediate results. It is usually made of ethylene and is resistant to temperature fluctuations, shrinking or mechanical damage. Thanks to its thick structure it is almost invisible from a distance. Moreover, if you have cats, it will protect them from falling out of the balcony. You can fix it yourself or get it done by an expert.

Pigeons can’t stand any bells, toy fans, shiny tapes, glittering pieces or CDs, as they reflect the light. These gadgets make them feel anxious and they will always choose a safer balcony.

An interesting method is buying a fake crow or another predator bird. If you fix it at the top of the balcony, so that wind will keep moving it, the birds will not notice it’s just a plastic thing. Otherwise they will soon get used to it.

You can also fix spikes finished with silicone endings. They are completely safe. The birds won’t get hurt but the spikes will not let them sit.
