The Origins Are Rooted in Tradition

In Japanese culture, the bed is an abstract concept and the Japanese usually sleep on so-called futons. These are special sleeping mats, which are unfolded before bedtime, and in the morning rolled up and hidden in the closet. Saving space is crucial, because the houses there do not have much space. Until the late 1950s, models designed for one person were mainly produced. Only later two-person models were introduced into circulation. However, they did not gain much popularity and just like beds, they are quite an exceptional view in Japanese apartments.

    It's Mainly About Work

The Japanese are among the leading nations that suffer from workaholism. Work is extremely important to them, so it is crucial for them to get enough sleep before work. Sleeping separately is therefore ideal for couples who work at different hours. Then none of them will wake up their partner and will not be disturbed by snoring or digging at night. Many times even spouses sleep in separate rooms.

    Sleep and Little Children

Japanese mothers are known for sleeping with their tiny children. That is why the father often gives up sleeping with his wife for the sake of her comfort and the child. Interestingly, such a solution has a good influence on the development of the toddler. The presence of the mother helps the child to maintain a stable temperature and get peace at the same time. Additionally, it reduces the risk of sudden infant death due to the so-called crib death. It also contributes to the fact that the child has better self-esteem in the future, becomes independent faster and does well in school.
