14 Historical Photos with an Unbelievable Story behind Them

History offers thousands of stories; some of them are hilarious while others really surprising. And there are some that few can really believe in. But for the photos, in fact nobody would.

The largest French cannon ever designed (Obusier de 520) exploded the first time it had been used. The second one was taken over by the Germans during WWII but also exploded after a few shots.

In 1983 three exotic dancers from Florida were taken to court for alleged nudity ban breach. Trying to defend themselves, they claimed that their outfits covered enough body and in fact did not violate the law. One of the dancers even bent before the judge to prove her right.

This is the first picture of Machu Picchu, taken in 1911 when it was discovered by Hiram Bingham. Although it happened well over a century ago we still don’t know much about this place.

On 16 July 1954 Disney land construction works commenced. To inspect their progress, Walt Disney visited the construction site a few times a week. To finance the project a TV series was used where various Disneyland areas where shown.

On 27 October 1904, the New York's subway opened its first line. In the picture we can see City Hall, the original southern end station of Manhattan Main Line.

In 1960's The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were the two biggest rock bands. The photo shows Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger on a train going to Bangor on 5 August 1967. To see these two legends together is a massive experience!

During World War I horses, donkeys and dogs were used by armies for transportation as well as other purposes. That is why they also had to be protected against toxic gases.

The photo was taken in 1921. It shows Henry Ford, a car manufacturer, Thomas Edison, an inventor, Warren Harding, a president of the USA and a tire industry tycoon called Harvey Firestone. As Ford and Edison were good friends, they would often go camping together and their friends visited them while they were in the country.

Friedrich Seidenstücker, a German photographer, specialized in portraits of people and animals. He is known for his photos showing the ruins of Berlin after World War II. And this is his famous portrait of an archer.

During one of his 1955's concerts Frank Sinatra stood on the stage with a glass of Jack Daniels and said that it was 'the nectar of the gods'. After this event the corporation made sure that whenever Sinatra appeared, a glass of their whiskey would be always in his hand. In this picture we can see him arriving in Hollywood with a glass in his hand. A glass of Jack Daniel's of course.

This photo was taken during a nuclear test that was conducted in the USSR in the cold war times. The Juzny Island was the testing side for almost 50 years. In fact as many as 43 tests were conducted there.

The women in the picture are French. They were stigmatized because of intimate relationship with the Nazis during WWII. On their foreheads you can see swastikas and their head were clean shaven.
