Flies attack
When weeding flowerbeds, there is probably nothing worse than a flock of flies circling persistently overhead. Some of them are so audacious that they try to get into your eyes, and they are absolutely not deterred by the constant waving of hands. Working in the garden in hot weather is an exhausting chore, so flies circle around us incessantly attracted by our sweat. However, this can be remedied.
Ways to get rid of flies
The smell that flies hate is the smell of vanilla. If you have real vanilla extract, add about a tablespoon of it to an empty spray bottle and mix it with a small amount of water so that the vanilla is not too diluted or it won't work. The extract must be pure, with no added sugar! Just spray yourself with such a product and flies will avoid you by a wide margin.
You can also prepare a fly repellent spray with peppermint oil, citronella oil and lemongrass oil.
Plants that repel flies
It's a good idea to have basil, lavender, lemon balm and mint planted in the garden. These herbs are effective in repelling flies. There will be fewer of them in a garden where the above mentioned herbs grow.
Fly trap in the garden
If flies are a nuisance to you only when you are working, make a trap for them. Use this simple trick!
Choose one of your hats or other headgear that you wear in the garden and wrap the brim with a good and fly-loving sticky. Armed with such a gadget you can go to the garden. Finally you will be able to work in peace, because all noisy insects will stick to the sticky, of course. With such a trap no malicious black fly will win. What a simple and brilliant life hack!
